<image:title>SoilMatters News - Nitrogen - forms, functions & failings - Nitrogen is needed to grow every crop, but when it is applied can make a big difference in plant health and crop quality. The Neoteric Ag P-N-K Principle states, “Start every crop with phosphorus, grow the crop with nitrogen and finish the crop with potassium.” Now that the Bloom Stage is finishing and Cell-Division is underway, it is now time to grow the crop. Nitrogen is needed to fortify the canopy and the developing fruit. Supplying the right form is critical for success. As an independent Certified Crop Adviser, I work with growers and their fertility management. One way I do this is with Nutrient Management Plans (NMP) tailored for their blocks’ needs. In many cases, this begins with a focus on nitrogen fertilizer applications. When starting with a new grower, I often find them applying fertilizers at rates that err on the side of “if a little is good, then a lot is better.” Sadly, these application rates are typically what was recommended by their Adviser and rarely is the application rate less than 40 pounds per acre. Why do I mention 40 pounds per acre rate? Because application rates at or above 40 pounds per acre suppress beneficial microbial activity, regardless of the soil Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). The soil holding capacity is a critical detail which should be considered in planning nitrogen application rates in order to improve the productivity of the soil and plants growing in it. If you do need 40 pounds of nitrogen, I have found split applications of 20 pounds per acre to be more effective than one at 40 pounds, especially when fertigating. Keep in mind with split applications, you need to allow time between applications (2-3 weeks depending upon growth stage). In fact, it’s a good stewardship practice to collect a plant tissue sample after the first fertigation, in order to determine if the second nitrogen application or any additional nitrogen is needed.</image:title>

      <image:title>SoilMatters News - Petal-Fall: time is of the essence - Size: Cell-Division Stage</image:title>
<image:caption>Cell-Division stage begins at Petal-fall and lasts about 23-27 days. It is very temperature dependent, with warm temperatures (above normal) speeding up the process and shortening the length of the stage. Like Bloom-Stage, a large volume of energy is required to support these activities. What activities? At this point, the tendency is to think of Cell-Division primarily in terms of the fruit and you would be partly correct. It is right, in terms of increasing fruit size potential at harvest, but Cell-Division also affects the canopy and it’s photosynthetic potential. This is crucial to support the fortified crops growth, development and improvement. Energy is vital.</image:caption>

<image:title>SoilMatters News - Bloom-stage: early development - Opti-Bloom from Axiom Ag is a ‘bio-available’ foliar nutrient bloom supplement. It contains “plant-ready” orthophosphate and potassium with a complex sugar (energy) source, in the form of bacillic acids which fortify blossom viability. This liquid formulation delivers nutrients and energy needed by blooming plants to attract pollinators and ensure yield potential is not limited by deficiencies. Opti-Bloom awakens the reproductive portion of plants by using microbial-fermentation technology. The “bio-availability” of this formulation results in a more consistent and uniform Bloom stage, which includes pollination, pollen tube growth, ovule receptivity, fertilization and crop retention. Do you have a “hard-setter” in your operation? How uniform is the blooming activity in your fields? Your Nutrient Management Plan is foundational and directly affects early development productivity. Many years ago, Marc was mentored by an agronomist who introduced him to Dr. William Albrecht and his soil balancing method. This method has proven to be invaluable in helping growers whose soil no longer responds to increased fertilizer application rates. Soil nutrient balance starts with the cation exchange capacity and includes adjusting the major cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na) based on the soil CEC. Working together, we will return balance to your soil to help to ensure your crops’ success!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Complete Interpretive Plant Tissue Analysis - If your plants could talk, what would they say to you? It’s good management practice to sample plant tissue at least twice a growing season for permanent crops. The information the plant relays through the make-up of it’s plant tissue is an indicator of what exactly the plant needs to finish the crop well. Working together, we will listen to what your plants are saying to help ensure your crops’ success!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Complete Interpretive Water Analysis - Plants drink their meals and water is their favorite mixer to provide their mineral nutrient diets. However, not all water has the same compounds. It takes three to five acre-feet of water to grow your crops well. When we identify contents your water, we better understand how that mineral nutrient cocktail you are giving your plants is being received and whether it is beneficial or degradational to your soil and plant health. Working together, we can give your plants the drink they are craving to ensure your crops’ success!</image:caption>

Almond hull sampling will tell us the Boron value contained in the hull - and if it’s in the hull, it’s in the crop! Working together, we will come up with a customized plan that ensures your almond crops’ success!</image:caption>

<image:caption>When calculating the soil water pH, the soil Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is calculated first. Then, based on the CEC, the soil sample is filled to Field Saturation Capacity with 68°F neutralized water and held for four hours. This simulates a good field irrigation. These are Dr. Albrecht’s research concepts that he discovered decades ago. By holding the soil sample at these controlled conditions (i.e. Field Saturation, temperature and time) allows for ideal conditions and a precise pH value calculation. If the process is rushed and shortened the results can be skewed. Nutrients like sulfur oxidize and release rapidly into sulfuric acid. This creates an acidified solution, but over time, as the solution is allowed to react, cations like calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc. can release. The presence of these cations buffers the acidity in the solution. [See Table 2] By controlling the variables, the resulting cation levels and final pH values represent a truer-to-real-life result; a value much more accurate as to what plant roots encounter and grow within.</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil - Measure before you manage it. Part 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Dirty, greasy bolts example: On your farm, a tractor breaks down. Getting it disassembled, repaired and back to work is critical. Once you have disassembled the broken parts, the dirty bolts and nuts need to be cleaned for reassembly. These parts are caked with dirt and oily, greasy buildup. All of these dirty pieces go into a parts bath, which is filled with a detergent-like solvent. The solvent cleans the grease, grime and dirt off the bolts and parts to a pretty clean finish. Water is also a solvent, but it is only a weak solution. If you put the same dirty, greasy parts into a bucket of water for cleaning and left them for a few hours soaking, some of the loose dirt would release, but not much of the sticky, greasy and oily residues would come off the parts. This represents the difference between an acidified paste extraction versus a neutralized water extraction with the dirty parts representing the soil particles. In both examples, there is a certain amount of “release” from the parts (much like cations) dependent upon the strength of the extraction solution. The tighter or stickier the bond to the parts, the stronger the solvent needs to be, in order for release into solution. In that kind of “sticky” circumstance, water extraction won’t release much off of the parts into the solution. But it accurately represents the differences in soil cation release and what you “want” to happen versus what “is actually” happening in your soil. This distinction is vital. In growing crops, you need reliable tools to deliver the expected results. This is true of fertility and nutrient options, as well as in your soil analysis results. Here’s the challenge, while you want analysis data gathered accurately from a controlled environment of the soil inventory, it’s often not the reality plant roots experience. Crops are not grown in a controlled setting, far from it. They are grown in “real-world” conditions, which can and do regularly change. The better your ability to adapt, adjust and weave together the lab results, production goals and nutrient management plans during the growing season, the better your likelihood of success. This is the “art” of growing quality crops consistently. You cannot control your growing conditions, but you can control your response to them. The information extracted to measure what you have to work with, needs to be as accurate as possible. In the next SoilMatters, we will discuss Soil Cation Exchange Capacity and Respiration Rate. These are both important analytical tools to more accurately measure soil health, in order to manage its productivity and improvement. You may already be working with a lab that performs these types of analyses. If not, they are readily available and affordable. Please allow me to show you how to incorporate this technology into your operation and improve your soil health and productivity. Email me at marcs@soilmatters.net with Soil Sampling Help in the subject line. I have some additional information to share with you to help you get started. Here’s to your crops’ success!</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil - Measure before you manage it. Part 4 - The final analytical measurement tool is the Denele Soil Health Report (DSHR). It is useful for getting an accurate soil health assessment, in terms of the soil microbial population and the activity levels. The Soil Respiration test starts by irrigating the sample with neutralized water and bringing it up to field saturation capacity based on the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). Once field saturation is reached, it is held at 68°F for seven days, in order to allow time for the microbiology to reproduce and nutrient compounds to react. Once field saturation is reached, it is held at 68°F for seven days, in order to allow time for the microbiology to reproduce and nutrient compounds to react. The first microbial calculation is done at the beginning of the process to establish the total starting population of the soil. The second microbial calculation is made at the end of the seven day analysis period. The second value reveals how much microbial “food” is available and releasing from the soil.</image:title>

<image:title>Healthy Soil - Measure before you manage it. Part 4 - Consider that alkaline and calcareous soils can often have large volumes of bicarbonates. These could be calcium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, etc. Regardless, each of these compounds will react and release carbon dioxide. These could be calcium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, etc. Regardless, each of these compounds will react and release carbon dioxide. This is a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide. If the analysis being performed counts total carbon dioxide release as microbial respiration activity, the bicarbonate chemical reactions will skew the true microbial results. For a Soil Health assessment to be most accurate it must separate the chemical reactions from the microbial reactions. One way to do this effectively is by allowing time for chemical reactions to occur and equalize so that in time, the microbial respiration activity can be differentiated and accurately measured.</image:title>

<image:title>Healthy Soil - Measure before you manage it. Part 4 - Every soil on every farm is different, but regardless of soil variability, microbial nitrogen release can significantly improve nitrogen use efficiency and plant productivity. This test calculates available nitrogen and nitrogen release over the growing season. In figures 1, 2 and 3 the Total Available Nitrogen is quite low which confirms microbial release activity is low. This is valuable information for planning a Nutrient Management Plan to ensure nitrogen is supplied when needed and over-applications are reduced if not eliminated. When fertilizer prices are at expensive levels, it is important to be precise, efficient and effective. The best way to be sure sure you are maximizing your fertilizer investment and benefit, is by annual soil sampling and in season plant tissue sampling. Remember, rebuilding soil health is good stewardship, but quite doable with the right tools and guidance. One final note, In figures 1 and 2 the Microbial Counts (Red Boxes) declined, but in the third year of soil inoculations and monitoring, the populations increased significantly. When undertaking the task of rebuilding soil health, it is good to have reasonable expectations as to how quickly you can expect to see your soil turn around.</image:title>
